Description

1. Overview

The Playa de Levante swimming channel (sports beach), located in Cabo de Palos, is a dedicated open water swimming facility promoted by the Cartagena City Council. It is a safe, clearly marked swimming lane, ideal for beginners, training sessions, and enjoying the marine environment in an area of outstanding environmental quality.

2. Technical Characteristics

  • Distance: 500 m
  • Difficulty: Low
  • Route type: Linear (out-and-back within the channel)
  • Area: 100% within a buoyed zone
  • Type: Swimming channel in a natural coastal environment
  • Configuration: Double line of buoys separated by approximately 20 m

3. Environment and Highlights

Located on Playa de Levante in Cabo de Palos, the channel is situated in an area with fewer bathers, making it more comfortable and suitable for sporting activities. The surroundings are notable for their scenic beauty, with views of the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse and La Manga del Mar Menor, in one of the most distinctive locations along the Murcian coast.

In addition, the planned expansion of the Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve will incorporate this swimming channel into a protected marine area, further enhancing its environmental value and uniqueness within the regional swimming route network.

4. Orientation and Navigation

Navigation is extremely simple thanks to the double line of buoys marking the swimming lane. This configuration ensures a clear and safe route at all times and is particularly suitable for swimmers with limited open water experience.

5. Safety and Recommendations

The channel offers a very high level of safety, as it is completely marked and separated from boat traffic. Access is via the northern side of the nautical channel, next to the lifeguard station, which should be used as the main entry and exit reference point.

Swimming is not recommended during strong easterly wind conditions, when sea state may make swimming more difficult.

6. Points of Interest

  • Swimming channel specifically designed for open water swimming
  • Views of Cabo de Palos Lighthouse and La Manga del Mar Menor
  • Mixed seabeds: sand, rock and Posidonia seagrass meadows
  • Exceptional water clarity and quality
  • Close proximity to SubUp Hostel as a support point for swimmers
  • La Manga Activa, a leading company offering local swimming guides

7. Connectivity and Considerations

This is an independent facility located within Playa de Levante. Its closed-channel configuration makes it a self-contained swimming area with no direct connection to other swimming routes.

8. Distinctive Value

A facility specifically designed for open water swimming, located within an area of high environmental value and a future protected marine reserve, making it a unique reference point for both local and visiting swimmers.
