Detailed Description
The Playa de Levante Swimming Channel in Cabo de Palos is an infrastructure specifically designed for open water swimming. Promoted by the Cartagena City Council, it is one of the safest and most accessible places for swimming in the Mediterranean waters of the Region of Murcia.
The channel is located at the northern end of Playa de Levante, a key urban beach in Cabo de Palos that has been designated as a sports beach. The configuration of this section of the beach and the partial protection provided by the breakwater generally create more stable conditions for swimming and training.
A double line of buoys clearly marks a closed circuit of approximately 500 metres, allowing swimmers to train comfortably and visually without constantly relying on watches or GPS devices to measure distance. This setup makes the channel particularly suitable for continuous training, technical sessions and introductory open water swimming.
Throughout the circuit, swimmers enjoy crystal-clear waters and the mixed seabeds of sand, rock and Posidonia seagrass meadows that characterize Cabo de Palos. The constant presence of the lighthouse and the open views towards La Manga enhance the unique visual appeal of the experience.
Despite being a relatively short and highly accessible circuit, the surroundings provide a strong sense of connection with the open Mediterranean and one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in the Region of Murcia.
The planned expansion of the Cabo de Palos – Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve will further increase the environmental value of this area, reinforcing its status as one of the leading open water swimming destinations on the Murcian coast.
The area is also home to a large local swimming community, active tourism companies and accommodation specialised in water sports.
