Description
This route forms part of the guide “Blue Trails – Ecotourism Routes by Kayak and Paddle Board”, where you will discover more itineraries for exploring the Costa Cálida from the sea.
This sea kayaking expedition offers a complete immersion into the wildest and best-preserved coastline of the municipality of Cartagena. Over the course of two days of paddling, kayakers travel along a stretch of coast that is virtually inaccessible by land, discovering pristine coves, crystal-clear waters and spectacular geological formations. It is highly recommended to undertake the journey accompanied by local guides, who provide both interpretation and safety.
The route begins at El Portús Beach, from where we paddle along the impressive Sierra de la Muela and the surroundings of Cabo Tiñoso. This protected natural area is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, which plunge directly into the Mediterranean, creating a landscape of outstanding ecological and scenic value. The journey allows us to appreciate every detail of the coastline, with caves, natural arches and vertical rock faces that can only truly be discovered from the sea.
Shortly after leaving El Portús Beach, it is highly recommended to stop and enjoy the self-guided snorkelling route along this section of coastline. It offers an opportunity to discover the countless surprises and remarkable biodiversity hidden beneath the surface.
During the first day, the route passes through stunning locations such as Cala del Barranco de la Muela (1.4 km) and the secluded Cala Aguilar (3.6 km), ideal places for the first technical stops and for enjoying the natural surroundings. As we continue, we reach the small coves of Cala del Bolete Chico (5.1 km) and Cala Bolete Grande (5.8 km), followed by even more remote spots such as Cala del Pozo de la Avispa (7.3 km) and Cala Salitrona (7.9 km), where isolation and tranquillity are absolute.
The second day also has a strong historical character. The coastline is dotted with former military structures such as the Jorel Battery (11.3 km), a reminder of the important strategic role this area once played in defending the Cartagena coastline. Today, these constructions blend into the landscape and add a unique cultural dimension to the journey.
We continue towards marine-rich locations such as Cala Cerrada (16.0 km), where a stop for snorkelling above the seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica is essential. These underwater meadows are considered the lungs of the Mediterranean and support extraordinary biodiversity. We then proceed to Cala Muñoz (17.2 km), one of the most spectacular and isolated spots along the route, before tackling the final stretch towards La Azohía.
The experience is enhanced by an overnight stay in a natural setting, allowing participants to enjoy the silence, star-filled skies and camaraderie of the group. This moment of pause strengthens the connection with nature and adds a deeper dimension to the adventure.
This expedition is one of the most complete sea kayaking experiences available on the Costa Cálida, combining sport, exploration, historical heritage and direct contact with nature in a unique, authentic and uncrowded coastal environment. It is ideal for those seeking more than just a route: a true maritime experience.
Leave No Trace
Minimising our impact on the environment is essential throughout the journey.
Always take your rubbish with you, including organic waste. For personal sanitary needs, move at least 60 metres away from the sea and from paths or transit areas. It is highly recommended to bury human waste in a hole 15–20 cm deep. Avoid leaving toilet paper behind; ideally, carry it out in a waterproof bag. Urination should be done on rock surfaces or bare ground without vegetation (gravel, pine needles, etc.).
These small actions help preserve this unique environment.
Complementary Activities in the Area
A truly authentic and unique experience is visiting the La Azohía Pier to witness the operation of the last remaining Almadraba in the Mediterranean, one of the most sustainable and environmentally respectful traditional fishing methods. This activity takes place between March and August.
It is also worth visiting the historic Santa Elena Tower, a site offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean and providing the perfect conclusion to the experience by combining landscape, history and the sea.
For diving enthusiasts, exploring the La Azohía–Cabo Tiñoso Marine Reserve is essential. It is one of the best-preserved marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean and, in addition to its abundant marine life and extensive Posidonia meadows, it also contains archaeological remains.

Recommended Time of Year
This expedition takes place in the open Mediterranean around Cabo Tiñoso, where it is exposed to prevailing easterly winds and marine currents. Conditions are generally favourable throughout the year, although it is important to note that winds may intensify during the middle of the day.
- Spring and summer are recommended for less experienced paddlers.
- Paddle early in the day and avoid midday hours, when thermal easterly winds may develop.
- Avoid days with strong easterly winds or forecasts exceeding 12–15 knots.
- Always check the weather forecast (AEMET, Windy) before departure.
Recommendations and Safety
- Wear a life jacket.
- Carry a mobile phone for taking photos and making emergency calls if necessary.
- During summer, use sun protection: a hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing and biodegradable sunscreen.
- Keep a safe distance from fishing vessels.
- Check the weather forecast before departure.
- If you have limited experience, guided excursions are recommended to ensure safety.
Equipment
- Water shoes for rocky areas.
- A dry bag containing water and food.
- Snorkelling goggles to make the most of any stops along the route.
Responsible Ecotourism
- Do not collect natural elements.
- Use products that are respectful of the marine environment.

Sustainability
Respect the natural environment, avoid unnecessary noise and keep away from bird nests during nesting season.
Always help keep the coastline and sea clean by taking your litter home with you… and, if possible, picking up a little extra too!
