Description

This route forms part of the guide “Blue Trails – Ecotourism Routes by Kayak and Paddle Board”, where you will discover more itineraries for exploring the Costa Cálida from the sea.

This highly accessible kayak route starts and ends at La Azohía Beach. Suitable for all skill levels, it has been specially designed to enjoy one of the most magical moments of the day: sunset over the sea.

From the shoreline, we paddle gently along the tranquil bay towards Punta de La Azohía, a privileged enclave on Cartagena’s coastline renowned for its crystal-clear waters and protected natural surroundings. Along the way, we pass beneath the Tower of Santa Elena and through the area where the traditional Almadraba fishing nets are set, a living reminder of the area’s fishing heritage.

As we move slightly away from the shoreline, the perspective changes and the landscape opens up towards the horizon, offering a spectacular panoramic view of Mazarrón Bay and its harbour.

The leisurely pace of the journey allows us to connect with our surroundings, listen to the sound of the water and watch as the changing light transforms the colours of the sea and the mountains surrounding the bay. La Azohía’s west-facing orientation makes it an exceptional place to admire the sunset, considered one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

Occasionally, this experience may also offer encounters with marine wildlife, such as dolphins during the excursion or stingrays that visit La Azohía Bay to spawn and can sometimes be seen in shallow waters. Although sightings are uncommon, they make the route even more memorable.

The highlight of the journey arrives as the sun begins to sink below the horizon, painting the sky with warm colours and creating a unique atmosphere that can only truly be experienced from the sea. After enjoying this unforgettable spectacle, we return peacefully to our starting point, accompanied by the soft light of dusk.

A relaxing and truly special experience, perfect for ending the day immersed in nature.

Complementary Activities in the Area

If you would like to extend your adventure, these nearby attractions are the perfect complement:

  • The Almadraba of La Azohía is one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly traditional fishing methods and the last remaining almadraba in the Mediterranean. Visiting the La Azohía pier to witness this ancient fishing tradition in action is an authentic and unique experience. It operates between March and August.
  • The Tower of Santa Elena, perched atop the cliffs, offers spectacular views across the entire bay. Built in the late 16th century, it served both as a refuge for the fishermen of La Azohía and as a watchtower to detect pirate activity along the coast.
  • The Church of the Immaculate Conception, located by the sea, marks the beginning of the “Church-to-Church Trail”, which follows the seafront promenade and leads to the church of Isla Plana.
  • If you visit the village of Isla Plana, take a walk along its coastline and discover the Los Tinteros Archaeological Site, Roman remains that connect visitors with the ancient history of this coastline.
  • Don’t miss the self-guided snorkelling routes.
Dive in and explore the seabeds of the Costa Cálida, where coves hide countless surprises and an extraordinary biodiversity beneath the surface.
