Description

This route forms part of the guide “Blue Trails – Ecotourism Routes by Kayak and Paddle Board”, where you will discover more itineraries for exploring the Costa Cálida from the sea.

There are moments that are not simply travelled through — they are felt. This route is one of them.

Starting from the peaceful Playa de Colón, we gently venture into the waters of the Mar Menor, following a quiet course almost directly eastward and allowing the rhythm of the water itself to guide our progress. It is a short and accessible route, suitable for all skill levels, where the experience matters far more than the distance covered.

As we move away from the shore, the horizon begins to transform. The first warm colours of dawn paint the sky and reflect upon the calm surface of the Mar Menor, creating a sense of tranquillity that is difficult to describe. The gentle glide across the water, the silence interrupted only by the sound of the paddle, and the connection with the surrounding environment create a true state of flow — a natural harmony with the sea.

Our visual destination is the iconic Calcetera Mill, which rises from the landscape as a witness to the passage of time and a landmark guiding our route. At this hour, its silhouette against the light of dawn adds an almost magical character to the journey.

The route can be enjoyed in several ways: individually on a paddle board, as a couple in a double kayak, or as part of a group by choosing the shared Dragon Boat experience (minimum of eight participants), enhancing the social and experiential aspect of the activity.

This privileged setting forms part of the delicate ecosystem of the Mar Menor, a coastal lagoon of immense environmental value and remarkable fragility.

More than a route, it is an invitation to connect with the sea, the landscape and yourself. A start to the day that stays with you long after you have returned to shore.

Complementary Activities in the Area

It is highly recommended to complement this route with a walk along the Encañizadas Trail, an ideal family-friendly route that offers an opportunity to discover the Las Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park.

Another possibility is to take part in one of the local Fishing Tourism activities: enjoy a guided visit to the San Pedro del Pinatar Fish Market, watch the live fish auction and learn how glass eels are caught or when the best season is to enjoy gilthead seabream.

At the Salt Flats Ponds, visitors can enjoy a therapeutic mud bath using clay-rich mud renowned for its beneficial effects on a wide variety of conditions. Access is free of charge.

Another must-do activity is snorkelling in the Mar Menor. The underwater itineraries organised by the Hippocampus Association provide visitors with an excellent opportunity to experience the seabed and its biological richness firsthand, while learning about marine culture and the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems. Be sure to consult the Guide to Marine Flora and Fauna Species of the Region of Murcia.

Don’t forget to sample the area's distinctive gastronomic specialities, based on lagoon fish, cured fish products and traditional rice dishes prepared with local ingredients, such as the famous caldero.

Responsible Ecotourism

Do not collect stones or natural elements from the environment. Use biodegradable sunscreens that are respectful of the marine ecosystem and reusable water bottles.

Sustainability

Respect private property along the coastline, avoid making noise that could disturb birdlife and keep away from nests during the nesting season.

Always help keep the coastline and sea clean by taking your litter home with you… and, if possible, picking up a little extra too!
