Description

This route forms part of the guide “Blue Trails – Ecotourism Routes by Kayak and Paddle Board”, where you will discover more itineraries for exploring the Costa Cálida from the sea.

This Blue Trail is highly accessible by paddle board and suitable for all skill levels. Starting and finishing at La Azohía Beach, it has been specially designed to enjoy one of the most magical moments of the day: sunset over the sea.

From the shoreline, we gently glide across the water, following the calm bay towards Punta de La Azohía, a privileged spot on Cartagena’s coastline renowned for its crystal-clear waters and protected natural surroundings. Along the way, a spectacular panorama opens up before us, revealing Mazarrón Bay and its harbour.

The leisurely pace of the journey allows us to listen to the sound of the water, experience the tranquillity of the evening, and watch as the changing light transforms the colours of the sea and the mountains surrounding the bay. La Azohía’s west-facing orientation makes it an exceptional place to enjoy the sunset, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

The highlight of the experience arrives as the sun begins to sink below the horizon, painting the sky with warm colours and creating a unique atmosphere that can only truly be appreciated from the sea. After enjoying this unforgettable spectacle, we return peacefully to our starting point, accompanied by the fading light of dusk.

On occasion, this experience may also offer encounters with marine wildlife, such as dolphins during the excursion or stingrays that visit La Azohía Bay to spawn and are sometimes visible in shallow waters. Although sightings are not common, these moments make the route even more special.

A relaxing, inspiring and truly memorable experience, perfect for ending the day floating between light and tranquillity.

Complementary Activities in the Area

  • The Almadraba of La Azohía is one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly traditional fishing methods and the last remaining almadraba in the Mediterranean. Visiting the La Azohía pier to witness this ancient fishing tradition in action is an authentic and unique experience. It operates between March and August.
  • The Tower of Santa Elena, perched atop the cliffs, offers spectacular views across the entire bay. Built in the late 16th century, it served both as a refuge for the fishermen of La Azohía and as a watchtower to detect pirate activity along the coast.
  • The Church of the Immaculate Conception, located by the sea, marks the beginning of the “Church-to-Church Trail”, which follows the seafront promenade and leads to the Hermitage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the church of Isla Plana.
  • If you visit the village of Isla Plana, take a walk along its coastline and discover the Los Tinteros Archaeological Site, Roman remains that connect visitors with the ancient history of this coastline.

Don't miss the self-guided snorkelling route. Dive in and explore one of the richest marine environments in the Mediterranean, discovering the biodiversity that makes every immersion a unique experience.
