Detailed Description

The Cabo de Palos open water swimming route offers one of the most spectacular and varied swimming experiences on the Costa Cálida. The route connects Playa del Salero, located beside the harbour entrance, with Playa de Levante, completely rounding the cape through a rugged and deeply Mediterranean coastal landscape.

From the very first metres, swimmers leave the harbour environment behind and enter a continuous succession of small coves, rocky platforms and open-water sections where the sea constantly changes in texture, colour and exposure. The geography of the cape creates a highly varied route, with continuous changes of direction and numerous visual references that make the crossing both dynamic and immersive.

Along the route, swimmers pass landmarks such as Cala de las Melvas, Cala Mayor, Cala Botella, Cala del Clavo, Cala del Muerto, Cala Roja, Cala Fría and Cala Túnez, each with its own characteristics and varying degrees of shelter and exposure. In many sections, the exceptional water clarity allows clear views of the underwater landscape, Posidonia seagrass meadows and rocky seabeds characteristic of this stretch of the Murcian coast.

One of the most remarkable moments of the route occurs when approaching the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse area, where the scenery becomes wilder and more open. Here, swimmers fully experience the transition between sheltered waters and the direct influence of the open Mediterranean, particularly on days with swell or easterly winds.

The crossing ends at Playa de Levante after completing one of the benchmark open water swimming routes in the Region of Murcia. Every year, this very route hosts the Timoncup, one of the most prestigious competitive open water swims on the Murcian coast.

The Cabo de Palos area also offers numerous opportunities to complement the sporting experience with activities related to the sea and coastal landscape. After the swim, it is highly recommended to follow the trail leading up to the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse, an outstanding viewpoint overlooking much of the route completed in the water.

The cape’s various coves also provide excellent conditions for snorkelling and marine observation, particularly during calm seas and good visibility. Those wishing to explore the underwater environment further can visit the Cabo de Palos and Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve, one of the most renowned diving destinations in the western Mediterranean.

The fishing harbour and local gastronomy complete an experience that combines sport, nature and maritime culture in one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes of the Region of Murcia.

Recommendations / Safety

This is an open water route outside buoyed swimming areas with a high level of exposure. Previous open water swimming experience is required, along with the ability to manage changing directions, waves and variable sea conditions.

It is recommended to undertake the crossing early in the morning and to avoid days with strong easterly winds or significant swell. Swimming with companions and, preferably, with kayak or boat support is strongly advised. The use of a highly visible safety buoy is essential.

Navigation follows the coastline, using the various coves and geographical features as visual reference points. The numerous coves along the route provide potential exit points if necessary.

Always check weather forecasts and sea conditions before starting the activity. Currents and rough-water areas may occur due to the morphology of the cape and easterly wind conditions.
