Detailed Description

The Calnegre–Galúa open water swimming route offers one of the most dynamic and attractive experiences along the Mediterranean coast of La Manga. Unlike other, more linear sections of the coastline, this route rounds a small headland that introduces constant changes in direction and creates a greater sense of exploration throughout the swim.

The crossing connects Calnegre Beach and Galúa Beach, following the Mediterranean shoreline and combining more exposed stretches with smaller sheltered areas and remarkable underwater biodiversity. The rocky outcrop known as La Raja is the route’s main geographical feature and serves as a constant visual reference.

Around La Raja, swimmers will find rocky seabeds and Posidonia seagrass meadows, which support abundant marine life. It is common to observe seabirds such as cormorants resting on the rocks or fishing in the waters surrounding the outcrop, reinforcing the natural character of the route.

The combination of coastal relief, typically clear waters and the ever-changing underwater scenery makes this one of the most enjoyable and complete swimming routes on La Manga’s Mediterranean coast.

Although the route is located within a tourist area, it provides a strong sense of connection with the open sea and the Mediterranean coastal landscape. Returning on foot between Galúa Beach and Calnegre Beach is easy, making logistics straightforward.

Calnegre Beach is officially designated as a sports beach, facilitating the practice of a variety of sporting activities. The area also offers a wide range of accommodation and tourist services.

Recommendations / Safety

Navigation is intuitive, following the coastline and using the headland and the La Raja outcrop as the main visual references. The changes in direction add variety to the route and make coastal navigation straightforward.

Although the route involves moderate exposure to open sea conditions, it generally performs well under different wind directions. Nevertheless, swimmers should always check the weather forecast before setting out.

The early morning hours usually provide the calmest conditions and the least wind.

The route is suitable for swimmers with some open water experience and can be completed either as a linear crossing or as a circular outing starting and finishing at Calnegre Beach.
