Detailed Description

The Playa Villananitos swimming route is one of the most accessible and safest environments for open-water swimming in the entire Region of Murcia. Located in the Mar Menor, Europe’s largest saltwater coastal lagoon, and developed entirely within the designated bathing area, this route is especially suitable for beginners, controlled training sessions, and guided activities.

The route runs parallel to the Lo Pagán seafront promenade, following the buoyed perimeter of the beach through shallow, calm waters with minimal wave action. The limited depth and constant proximity to the shore create a strong sense of safety and make navigation easy throughout the route.

Unlike more exposed routes along the Murcia coastline, the swimming experience here is defined by the calm waters of the Mar Menor and the ease of logistics. Visual references are continuous, and the urban setting provides convenient access to all necessary services before and after the activity.

Villananitos Beach is officially classified as a sports beach, making it one of the leading locations in the Mar Menor for organized aquatic and sporting activities.

The route can easily be complemented with walks along the Lo Pagán waterfront and nearby areas of the Mar Menor. It can also be combined with the Playa de la Mota route to increase the total swimming distance. In this case, it is recommended to make the connection on foot to avoid crossing the navigation channel.

The San Pedro del Pinatar area also offers numerous opportunities for nature and wellness tourism, including the beaches and dunes of the Regional Park of Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro, traditional mud baths, and walking and cycling routes along the northern shore of the Mar Menor.

Accessibility

Very easy access by road and public transport. Parking is available near the beach. Wide range of services including restaurants, showers, restrooms, and an accessible seafront promenade.

The beach offers good accessibility conditions and easy water entry under normal sea conditions. The constant proximity to the promenade and the shallow waters make the activity suitable for a wide range of users.

Recommendations / Safety

Navigation is very straightforward, using the buoys marking the bathing area as a continuous reference. The route is bounded by the boat access channel in the western sector and by the Lo Pagán Yacht Club breakwater in the eastern sector.

The shallow depth of the route (approximately 2 metres maximum) and the constant proximity to the shoreline allow swimmers to maintain visual orientation throughout the activity.

The safety level is very high thanks to the combination of a buoyed bathing area, the absence of boat traffic within the route, and the generally calm conditions of the Mar Menor. It is particularly suitable for beginners, groups, guided activities, and technical training sessions.

The use of a visible safety buoy is also recommended, and swimmers should always remain within the designated bathing area.
