Detailed Description
The Playa de Bolnuevo open-water swimming route is an accessible and recreational itinerary that takes place entirely within the designated buoyed bathing area. It is especially designed for holidaymakers, regular swimmers, and visitors staying in the area who are looking for a comfortable and safe place to swim in the Mediterranean.
The route follows a wide, open beach that is particularly popular during the summer season and officially designated as a sports beach. Its location, close to hotels, campsites, and tourist facilities, makes it an ideal place for regular swimming without the need for long journeys.
The route extends between the navigation channel opposite the Bolnuevo Erosions and the navigation channel opposite the campsite, creating a clear, linear course that is easy to follow. The line of buoys provides straightforward navigation throughout the swim, while the broad beach creates an excellent sense of space and continuity, making it ideal for gentle training sessions and recreational swimming.
One of the route's greatest attractions is its immediate proximity to the Bolnuevo Erosions, remarkable geological formations sculpted by erosion that represent one of the most iconic natural landscapes along the Mazarrón coastline. The contrast between the wide beach, the striking rock formations, and the Mediterranean Sea gives this route a distinctive identity.
In some sections, Posidonia seagrass meadows can be found, adding ecological value to the route and highlighting the characteristic Mediterranean seabed of this stretch of the Murcia coastline.
More experienced swimmers may extend the route by rounding Punta Cueva de Lobos and continuing to the Bolnuevo Coves. This variation leads to a more rugged and natural coastline but requires leaving the buoyed area, making it suitable only for experienced swimmers with favourable sea conditions.
Bolnuevo is also home to the Seaman Open Water Race, an annual competitive swimming event that reinforces the beach's strong connection with open-water swimming.

Recommendations / Safety
Navigation is straightforward by following the buoy line marking the designated bathing area. The route extends between the campsite area and the northern navigation channel, located opposite the Civil Protection lifeguard station.
The route offers a high level of safety as it remains entirely within the bathing area. It is suitable for swimmers of different abilities, particularly beginners, recreational swimmers, and those training regularly during the summer season.
During the high season, swimmers should be aware of the increased number of beach users and always remain within the limits of the buoyed area.
The optional extension towards Punta Cueva de Lobos and the Bolnuevo Coves should be considered a more demanding alternative outside the buoyed area and is recommended only for experienced swimmers equipped with a safety buoy and swimming in favourable weather conditions.
