Detailed Description
The Playa de Colón swimming route offers a comfortable, accessible and safe environment for open water swimming in the Mar Menor. The route takes place entirely within the designated bathing area, on an urban beach with a strong sporting character and a high concentration of activities linked to active tourism.
The beach is officially classified as a sports beach and is one of the most dynamic locations in the municipality of San Javier for organized water-based activities. The area combines excellent logistical accessibility, a seafront promenade and all the services required for regular training, beginners and guided sessions.
Throughout the route, swimmers enjoy the calm conditions and shallow waters characteristic of the Mar Menor, creating a comfortable and controlled experience even for those with little open water experience. Orientation is straightforward thanks to the constant proximity of the shoreline and the continuous reference provided by the boundary buoys.
One of the most distinctive features of this route is the presence of fan mussels (Pinna nobilis), an emblematic and protected Mediterranean species currently undergoing recovery. This adds significant environmental value and reinforces the ecological uniqueness of the route.
The geography of the Mar Menor and its status as an enclosed sea mean that swimming is often possible even during periods of strong winds or rough sea conditions in the open Mediterranean. This makes Playa de Colón particularly suitable for regular training, organized activities and open water swimming initiation.
