Detailed Description

The Poniente Beach swimming route is one of the main urban open water swimming areas in Águilas, designed for continuous training and regular practice. The entire route takes place within the buoyed swimming area of a sports beach frequented by an active local swimming community.

Located between Playa de la Colonia and Juan Montiel Marina, Poniente Bay is more exposed to the open sea than other urban beaches in the municipality, creating a more dynamic and slightly more challenging swimming environment.

The length of the route and the continuity of the bay allow swimmers to maintain a steady pace and undertake longer training sessions, making it one of the most popular locations for regular swimmers and those focused on fitness training.

Within the buoyed area there are two submerged breakwaters, one perpendicular and one parallel to the beach, which serve as additional visual reference points during the swim. These structures also create small marine biotopes that attract associated marine life, adding environmental interest to the route.

The combination of an urban setting, Mediterranean openness and a strong local swimming culture makes Poniente Beach one of the most representative open water swimming locations in Águilas.

Points of Interest (POIs)

  • Poniente Sports Beach
  • Active local swimming community
  • Submerged breakwaters with associated marine biotopes
  • Area between Playa de la Colonia and Juan Montiel Marina
  • Urban bay with greater exposure to the Mediterranean
  • Popular route for continuous swim training

Accessibility

Easy access by road and public transport. Parking is available near the beach. Restaurants, showers, a seafront promenade and other tourist services are available along the waterfront.

Water entry is generally easy under normal sea conditions.

Recommendations / Safety

Navigation is straightforward by following the buoy line within the designated swimming area. The two submerged breakwaters provide additional visual references and aid orientation during the swim.

Although the route remains entirely within a buoyed area, its greater length and reduced protection from easterly winds may create more demanding conditions than those found at other urban beaches in Águilas.

This route is particularly recommended for swimmers with some previous experience and those accustomed to regular open water training.
