Detailed Description
The Playa del Estacio swimming route offers a particularly distinctive experience within La Manga del Mar Menor. Although it takes place in an urbanized setting, the route conveys a strong sense of openness, spaciousness and direct connection with the Mediterranean Sea, clearly distinguishing it from the more sheltered routes of the Mar Menor.
The swim takes place entirely within the buoyed area of the Mediterranean Sea, using the La Manga Sports Centre as its main reference point. From the very first metres, the constant presence of Isla Grosa and the Estacio Lighthouse creates a strong visual identity and provides excellent orientation throughout the route.
The swim follows an extensive stretch of open beach dominated by sandy seabeds. However, alongside the line of buoys there is a parallel rocky strip with Posidonia seagrass meadows, adding biodiversity and underwater interest to the route.
Despite being located in one of the most popular tourist areas of the Murcian coast, the route offers a surprising sense of space and relatively low user density, especially outside the peak summer season. The vast Mediterranean horizon and moderate exposure to open water create a smooth and enjoyable swimming experience.
For more experienced swimmers, the route can be significantly extended southwards, as the Mediterranean buoyed area continues for several additional kilometres beyond the Estacio navigation channel.
At any point, swimmers can leave the water and easily walk back to the starting point.
The La Manga area also offers a wide range of accommodation, restaurants and services related to sports and nautical tourism, providing a complete experience for swimmers and their companions.

Recommendations / Safety
Navigation is straightforward by following the line of buoys marking the swimming area. The constant presence of Isla Grosa and the Estacio Lighthouse makes orientation easy throughout the route.
As the route takes place in the Mediterranean Sea, it is more exposed to wind and waves than routes within the Mar Menor. Conditions can change rapidly depending on the weather.
Easterly winds generally create less favourable swimming conditions, while northerly winds tend to provide greater protection and calmer seas.
The route is suitable for swimmers with some open water experience and is particularly attractive for medium-distance training sessions.
