Snorkeling at Calarreona Beach (Águilas)

The magnificent Calarreona Beach offers an outstanding snorkelling route along its southern shoreline. Hundreds of rocks scattered across the seabed create a fascinating underwater landscape that can be explored in a spontaneous zigzag route, revealing an abundance of marine life.

Close to the shore there is an extensive rocky platform full of crevices, some of which are occupied by sea anemones known locally as sea noodles. These should not be touched, as they may cause skin irritation. Moving slightly farther offshore, enormous boulders rest on a seabed of sand and Posidonia seagrass, at depths exceeding five metres. For those wishing to observe the greatest variety of marine life, it is best to stay close to the shoreline, alongside the rocky platform covered with brown and green algae. Here, hundreds of fish such as salema porgies and damselfish accompany visitors throughout the route.

Meanwhile, other species such as cuttlefish attempt to camouflage themselves by adapting both their colour and body texture to their surroundings, a remarkable ability shared with their close relative, the octopus.

Exploring among the rocks is particularly enjoyable. Some emerge above the water’s surface, while underwater they provide ideal shelter for species such as blennies, gobies and comber fish. Other rocks display curious shapes, making this area especially attractive for underwater photography.

There is no need to continue as far as the neighbouring Cala de la Higuerica. Whenever you wish, you can turn back and continue enjoying this exceptional snorkelling excursion.

In all cases, it is advisable to remain close to the rocky shoreline in order to avoid any risks associated with passing boats.
